Dexter Kane could barely hide his disappointment I had not “signed my name to the book,” but he let us go with no further pressure.

“Mechanical devil,” I muttered at the motorcycle as Ollie held out the helmet.

“What did you say?” he smirked as I climbed on.

“What’s a blood devil?” My stomach lurched as he pulled away from the church and drove slowly around the parking lot toward the exit. “And an earth devil?”

“A vampire, and a witch,” Ollie said in my ear as the wind whipped around me again. “Did the Grace Gang talk to you about the different devils? That’s kind of surprising. Not something they’d usually open with.”

“There’s more?”

“Ghosts? Spirit devils. Shapeshifters? Fauna Devils. Nymphs? Flora devils.”

“If you were raised in that church, how on earth did you wind up at Avalon Grove in Mickwac?” I asked him, referencing Priestess Goodfellow’s magic shop and coven back in Texas. “Those women did everything but throw holy water on me.”

“There’s no holy water because, obviously, it’s got devils in it,” Ollie responded with a small chuckle. “Dad’s not a Christian, though I don’t know that some of the folks that go to the church understand that. Well, the people really into it do. Anyway, as I grew up, I never totally bought into his worldview. And when I got to college, I wanted to know what all the devils were and why Dad was so obsessed with them.”

“No offense, Ollie, but those women? They sounded more like members of a cult than members of a church.”

“There’s a finer line between those things than you might think,” he answered. “Did you find out anything about the urn?”

“I don’t think they took it. I mean, I think they would be capable, but they seemed really…I don’t know, in awe of Martin?” I felt Ollie’s head nod yes. “By the way, do you know of anyone in town that has the last name I do?”

“Addington?”

“Delphi.”

“I thought that was your magical name.”

“It is,” I admitted. “But the Grace Gang said some things that implied there used to be other people in this town with the same name.”

“I don’t, but to be honest, I’ve never been super into this town’s weird history. You know, it may be time to talk to Miss Bessie,” Ollie said. “I bet she’d know. By the way, hold on.”

The engine roared as we sped up, and I stopped being capable of talking through my panic.

But I didn’t scream.

So, improvement.
